Assembled by Sarah Wilkinson, Hunter Williams; October 2024
Fragility Rating: 4 / 5 (unstable; avoid touching)
Premise: A young musical prodigy, Kousei, has lost the ability to hear himself play the piano after his abusive mother dies. He meets a cellist, Kaori, at school who forcibly persuades him to be her accompanist at a competition, which causes him to confront his traumas. Along the way, he learns that she is very ill.
Favorite Moments: During a performance together, Kaori continuously increases the tempo, going off-script and challenging Kousei to keep up. Despite his anxiety, he is able to follow her lead and create beautiful music together. Another favorite moment was at the end of the series when Sarah realized the cellist would die from her illness. She turned to Hunter, and with utter betrayal in her voice, demanded to know, "Wait, SEHE DIES? You knew she dies and you made me watch this anyway?!" Hunter found Sarah's reaction to be amusing.
Significance of the Set: The main character, Kousei, is a prodigy in the piano. Sarah thought the brick flowers on the lid of the piano were pretty.
Where It's Streaming: Netflix and Crunchyroll; the finale aired in 2015.
Reason They Watched: It was Hunter's turn to pick their next show, and it was April. Yep, that's the whole reason. Hunter is a simple man.
